The Dog Whisperer chronicles the work of Cesar Millan, a Mexican American with an instinctive approach to rehabilitating dogs with problem behaviour.

Born in 1969, Millan spent his childhood in the city of Culiacan in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, however his favourite place was his grandfather’s ranch where he was captivated by the wild dogs on the property. He spent so much time with the dogs that locals called him el Perrero, "the dog boy." His fascination with dogs extended to television, as his favourite programs featured highly-trained dogs such as Lassie.

By his teens, Millan had decided that he wanted to be Hollywood animal trainer, and moved to Los Angeles where he worked for a dog grooming store and then for a limousine company. He ran a dog training business from a van before opening the Dog Psychology Center in South Los Angeles where he focused on rehabilitating especially aggressive dogs. His expertise with dogs was publicised primarily by word of mouth and Millan soon developed a clientele that included entertainment-industry professionals. Millan’s first mention in the national mainstream media came in People magazine in December of 2002 in an article describing his work with action-film director Ridley Scott’s Jack Russell Terriers.

The Dog Whisperer program has featured occasional appearances by Millan’s (now ex) wife Illusion and two sons.

In 2005 and again in 2007, Millan was awarded the Michael Landon Award for Inspiration to Youth Through Television. The show received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Reality Program in both 2006 and 2007, though it did not take the award on either occasion.

In 2008, Dog Whisperer won TV Best Variety or Reality Show at the 23rd Annual Imagen Foundation Awards, and also won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Animal Show that same year.Dog Whisperer again won the People's Choice Awards in the category of Favourite Animal Show in 2010.

The Humane Society of the United States Genesis Award Committee presented Millan with a 2008 Special Commendation for his work in rehabilitating animals. In 2010, the show was nominated for the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Reality Programs but did not take the award.

    米兰的祖父曾教导他“永远不要违背自然规律”。受此启发，米兰决定从事狗的心理研究，从中探寻人与狗和睦相处的自然规律。

    米兰认为，没有一只狗天生就是“杀手”，它们制造暴力事件，往往应归咎于主人，是主人不能满足它们的需要。

    通过大量阅读，加上亲身研究和试验，米兰制定出一套使“问题狗”顺从、安静的方法。他和妻子合办了一个非营利的“狗心理中心”，致力于研究狗的身心健康。无论是什么体型、年龄和品种的狗，只要发生行为异常，都可以送到心理中心就诊。根据狗病情的严重程度，米兰有时用两个小时就可以解决问题，有时却要求主人多次带狗访问心理中心。

    与其他宠物心理医生不同，米兰可以同时应对一群“问题狗”。最多的时候，有６０只狗一起居住在心理中心。

    同时控制几十只狗，米兰并没觉得难以应付：“整个狗群中，的确有一些狗相对强壮，但你只要努力让它们和自己的心态保持平和……我喜欢和许多狗在一起，它们带给我快乐。”

    米兰的心理中心还开展领养活动，为流浪狗寻找新家。如果暂时无法找到合适的人家，这些狗可以一直在心理中心居住，直到被人领养。

    方法：驯狗先训人

    米兰认为，在调教狗的同时，教育主人更为重要。主人应当认识到，他们有责任满足宠物身体、心理和感情上的需要，学会通过宠物狗的眼睛审视世界。

    “狗行为异常，那是你（主人）的错，而不是狗的错，”他说，“狗只是狗，只做主人允许的事情，按主人的暗示行事。”

    米兰认为，在野外，狗如果要生存，必须依靠强大、稳定和组织良好的群体。在这个群体中，成员要遵守首领制定的“规则”。同样，在人与狗的相处中，人应当成为那个“冷静、自信”的“领导者”，让宠物充分相信、服从自己。狗只有在不相信人类的时候，才会做“出格”的事。

    米兰教导养狗爱好者给自家的宠物狗制定纪律，以“领导者”的姿态纠正小狗的不良行为。在此过程中，主人要冷静、自信、持之以恒。

    “许多人将纪律和惩罚、残忍混淆在一起，”他说，“他们不明白‘爱’的真正含义。动物并不排斥纪律、规定、界线和限制，它们尊重这些。”

    米兰不认为“教导主人”是件难事。“教人当然要简单一些，”他说，“我已经掌握了一套学习模式，知道哪种方法更加有效。”他还表示，学习效果有时取决于狗主人的生活方式。

    此外，米兰反对在调教狗的过程中急于求成，更反对用殴打、呵斥的方法对待狗：“做宠物狗的‘领导’，给它们定规矩，并不是要让它们恐惧，甚至惩罚它们。”

    米兰认为，调教爱犬的过程，也有助于主人自己修身养性。“要给爱犬树立领导者的形象。纠正狗的不良行为时，要保持头脑冷静、自信，”他说，“对于某些人来说，这可能是个挑战，但你必须那样做。从中，你可以学到一种健康的行为方式。”

    当然，并非所有人都赞同米兰的驯狗方法，甚至有人指责他“一无所知”。对此，米兰表示，他从未说过他的驯狗方法完全正确或是唯一的。“我们为客户提供一种选择，它不是唯一的方法，”他说。

    发展：走上荧屏

    2004年9月，米兰带着他独特的驯狗方法，走上美国国家地理频道的《狗语者》节目，在观众中引起很大反响。人们认识到，最需要米兰帮助的不是行为异常的狗，而是它们的主人。

    2006年1月，《狗语者》开播第二季系列节目。节目中，米兰常常在事先毫无准备的情况下，成功调教各种问题狗，包括“沉迷”游泳的黄狗、好斗的德国牧羊犬、总是追逐溜冰滑板的斗牛犬、试图攻击主人的波美拉尼亚种小狗等。

    有时，米兰也会在节目中遇到十分“难缠”的问题狗。“在第四季的节目中，有一次，我用了70天调教一只狗……”他说，“真是艰苦。有时人们希望立竿见影，但我要研究问题的全貌，发现内在规律。”

    米兰的节目获得了成功，不少人用他介绍的方法纠正了宠物狗的不良行为。现在，除美国外，英国、日本、瑞典、荷兰、丹麦、新西兰和泰国等15个国家也开始播出《狗语者》系列节目。

    为了配合节目播出，米兰出版了他的第二本书《成为群体的领导者：用恺撒的方法改变你的狗和你的生活》。

    当被问到成为公众人物的感想时，米兰回答说：“我来自墨西哥。我很荣幸能成为美国文化的一部分。我用幽默的态度对待一切。”

A number of entertainment-industry professionals have appeared on the program, including Jada Pinkett Smith.

The program has received awards, as well as criticism from animal behaviorists and organizations.

Dog Whisperer follows Cesar Millan, renowned dog behavior expert, as he goes directly into the homes of dog owners – without any prior information about the dog's case – and documents the remarkable transformations that take place under Cesar's calm, assertive guidance.
